When you spend enough time on David vs. Goliath-type battles, you realize that not all battles end as happily as the parable. Forests get clear-cut, plants close, undeserving people get deported to torture. Hey, the rich and the powerful wouldn’t accumulate wealth or power if it didn’t do anything right?
But with diligence, patience, and a sense of humour to get you through, forests can re-grow, plants can re-open, and people can be brought back from places where they were unjustly stranded in. And every loss just makes every victory all the sweeter.
So it was all the more sweet to hear the news from Mez via Facebook that the Ontario Government had decided to suspend its plans to build more nuclear power plants. Back in 2007, I worked with Greenpeace and Leslieville to develop a tongue-in-cheek YouTube video and petition website called ilovenukes.ca. It’s still up, and has over 1000 signatures.
